After being home with her 2- and 5-year-old, she has rejoined the workforce as a program officer for the Stoneleigh Center in Philadelphia, a foundation established in 2006 to help improve the life chances of children and youth.

She reports that her studies at La Follette and her work as an analyst at the Wisconsin Legislative Audit Bureau prepared her well for this work. “I use the lessons learned in the courses on quantitative tools and microeconomics to interpret data and asses the strengths and weaknesses of various research methods used in studies that I design and in the work of others that I analyze,” she says.

The public management and policy analysis courses taught her how to assess the effectiveness of policies and to anticipate the challenges policymakers might encounter as they consider options, she says. The writing and presentation skills necessary to capture the attention of the busy policymaker also are essential.

“The courses in which we worked directly with local organizations and agencies on real-world projects gave me valuable experience in addressing public policy questions on the ground level.”
