Korean Studies: "A Mere Scrap of Paper"

The 1882 Korean-American Treaty, Syngman Rhee, and the Division of Korea. Why was Korea divided in the first place? American military leaders claimed that Korea had no strategic value to the United States and their lack of planning for either an assault on or an occupation of Korea proved they believed it. This talk by historian David Fields will explain how Syngman Rhee and his Korean and American supporters used an obscure treaty to transform Korea into a place of symbolic importance to the United States prior to 1945.
