Joe Soss is Professor of Political Science and Public Affairs and Faculty Affiliate at the Institute for Research on Poverty and the La Follette School of Public Affairs. His research focuses on the politics of poverty and social policy, public opinion, and political behavior. He is working on three projects: an edited volume examining how policy feedback processes shape the politics of poverty and inequality in the United States; a multimethod study of devolution, privatization, and frontline discretion in the Florida Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program; and several papers examining how racial attitudes affect public support for welfare provision in the United States. He is an award-winning teacher.
Professor Soss is author of Unwanted Claims: The Politics of Participation in the U.S. Welfare System and co-editor of Race and the Politics of Welfare Reform. His work has appeared in the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, Public Opinion Quarterly, and Political Communication, among other journals.
Prior to his appointment at the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 2003, Professor Soss taught at American University. He received his doctorate in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
