Norquist to give Offner lecture Sept. 23

Former Milwaukee mayor and a 1988 La Follette School alum John Norquist will give the Paul Offner memorial lecture on today, September 23, at 5 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge of the Pyle Center. He will speak on "Urbanism and the Value of Cities."

A live audio webcast will be available.

Offner was a former Wisconsin lawmaker and national policy expert who died in 2004. The event is sponsored by the La Follette School of Public Affairs and the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C.

Norquist is now president of the Congress for the New Urbanism, based in Chicago. He works to promote New Urbanism as an alternative to sprawl and antidote to sprawl's social and environmental problems. A leader in national discussions of urban design and educational issues, Norquist is the author of The Wealth of Cities.

Offner, a former Wisconsin state senator who died in 2004, was a consultant at The Urban Institute where he contributed to breakthrough research on poverty in America. He left Wisconsin to serve as deputy director of the Ohio Department of Human Services before becoming a senior legislative advisor to U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.), chief health and welfare counselor for the U.S. Senate Finance Committee and commissioner of the District of Columbia‚Äôs Commission on Health Care Finance.

"Paul Offner was known to represent the best of public service," says La Follette School Director Carolyn Heinrich. "We are honored to sponsor a public lecture in his memory in partnership with the Urban Institute."
