Student describes Wisconsin Idea in Scientific American blog

Princess Ojiaku

First-year student Princess Ojiaku shares her impression of the La Follette School and the University of Wisconsin–Madison in her Scientific American blog, Science with Moxie: Musical Notes on Neuroscience.

Ojiaku is in the neuroscience and public policy program, working on a master of international public affairs and a doctorate in neuroscience. In her blog, she notes that the Wisconsin Idea resonates in both programs. “The phrase that sums up this idea is ‘the boundaries of the university are the boundaries of the state,’” she writes. “The Wisconsin Idea points back to the namesake of the public policy school, Robert M. La Follette. As governor and senator of Wisconsin in the early 20th century, La Follette teamed up with the University of Wisconsin’s president Charles Van Hise in an attempt to make sure that the university’s activities also informed and benefited the people living in the state of Wisconsin.”

Prior to enrolling at the La Follette, Ojiaku completed a master’s degree in biology at North Carolina Central University and a virtual internship for Scientists and Engineers for America. At UW she plans to concentrate on development and science policy.
