Professor Greg Nemet’s research and analysis about cost reductions in energy technology are featured in a column by The Atlantic senior editor Alexis Madrigal.
Nemet identifies the factors that have reduced the cost of producing solar energy, including the size of factories, efficiency of the photovoltaic module and the cost of silicon. He has shown that the process of learning by doing is not the only way to reduce costs. Nemet also has determined that funding for research and development is more likely to be effective than subsidies in making organic solar cells competitive in the market.
