La Follette School students are planning several social and volunteer activities.
The first is Saturday, February 18, when eight students take the Polar Plunge to help raise funds for Special Olympics Wisconsin. The Fighting Bobs team has more than tripled its fund-raising goal of $500, but pledges can still be made online.
The Bobs taking the plunge into the chilly waters of Lake Monona at Olin Turville Park are Colin Christopher, Selina Eadie, C.P. Frost, Kelsey Hill, Joe O’Connell, Susanna Rasmussen, Katherine Sydor and HJ Waukau.
Rasmussen, the volunteer coordinator for the La Follette School Student Association, coordinated the school’s polar plunge team. Special Olympics Wisconsin provides sports training and competition in 18 sports for nearly 10,000 athletes with cognitive disabilities.
An ice skating trip will be Sunday, February 26, from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. in the Shell-Camp Randall Sports Center, during the campus facility’s open skating period. “We originally wanted to plan an outdoor skating event, but with the warm weather we may not have enough ice,” says LSSA social coordinator Katie Kruse. The cost is $3 per student to skate and $2 to rent ice skates. Student ID is required. RSVP to Kruse, kakruse[at]wisc[dot]edu, so she knows how many people to expect.
A hunger meal on Thursday, March 1, will will demonstrate inequality and how most people in the world subsist on very limited budgets. A $25 ticket gives a guest a small chance at a delicious “wealthy” meal, a larger chance at a more modest meal and a very substantial chance at a humble meal, says organizer Pete Braden, LSSA fund-raising coordinator. Professor Bob Haveman will lecture on the wealth gap. The event is 6 to 9 p.m. in the Red Gym. Proceeds wll benefit LSSA and Second Harvest Foodbank. To purchase a ticket, contact Braden at pbraden[at]wisc[dot]edu.
Prospective students can chat with current students at a happy hour LSSA will host Tuesday March 27, starting at 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Union. “We hope students will come to happy hour to take a break from studying and chat with prospective students,” Kruse says. “There will be some type of free food available; we are working out the details.”
LSSA is planning a spring dinner in April, Kruse adds.
