Moynihan wins national book award

Donald Moynihan

Management expert Donald Moynihan has won an award from the American Political Science Association in recognition of the significant impact his 2008 book has had on public administration scholarship since its publication.

Moynihan will receive the Herbert Simon award for The Dynamics of Performance Management: Constructing Information and Reform at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association in September in New Orleans. The award is given to a book that has had a major influence on public administration scholarship in the last three to five years. The Academy of Management's Public and Nonprofit Division named it the best book for 2009.

This summer, Moynihan is sharing his expertise at three conferences. In June he presented the paper “The Role of Performance Regimes” at the Complex Systems, Pernicious Instability and Institutional Resilience: Urgent Challenges for Public Administration workshop held at Utrecht University’s School of Governance in the Netherlands.

In July, Moynihan will attend the 2012 Engineering Research and Innovation Conference sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation in Boston. He will present research from his NSF project on how different levels of government, non-profits and private actors can prepare to respond to crises.

Moynihan will participate in a conference in Speyer, Germany, called Converging and Conflicting Trends in the Public Administration of the U.S., Europe, and Germany later in July. He will present a paper on the administrative barriers individuals encounter when they apply for Medicaid benefits.

Moynihan has several forthcoming articles on performance management and red tape to be published in the Journal of Public Administration and Theory, the International Public Management Journal and Public Administration Review.
