The La Follette School welcomes its entering class of 59 students with an orientation session Thursday, August 30, that includes advice for the first semester, a run-down on curricular and academic information, and an introduction to faculty, staff and continuing students.

The orientation gathering in the Education Building on Bascom Hill provides an overview of La Follette faculty, staff, curriculum and career development options. It starts at 9 a.m. in the Wisconsin Idea Room with check-in and refreshments. Presentations get underway at 9:30 a.m. when director Tom DeLeire and associate director Susan Yackee welcome students. At 9:45 a.m., professors Tim Smeeding, Geoffrey Wallace and Andrew Reschovsky will discuss their research interests and share advice for the first semester.
“Orientation is the formal launch of the school year and a great way for incoming students to meet each other, the faculty, staff and continuing students,” Yackee says.
The entering class has 39 students pursuing the master of public affairs degree and 20 enrolling in the master of international public affairs program. Sixty-one percent of the new students are Wisconsin residents. Others are coming from Korea, China, Illinois, Massachusetts, South Dakota, Indiana, Ohio, Kansas, Michigan, New Jersey, Missouri, Iowa and Washington, D.C.
Yackee will give will give an overview of the curriculum and faculty advising in a session that starts at 10:30, followed by student services coordinator Mary Cate Treleven explaining general academic requirements, the La Follette student handbook, the duel-degree and certificate programs and course planning. Career Development Coordinator Kate Battiato will explore how students can advance their career goals and outline the course PA800 Professional Development Seminar. Publications director Karen Faster will touch on writing and editing support, and discuss student news and profiles and alumni relations, follow by outreach staffers Terry Shelton and Bridget Pirsch, who will discuss the role of the La Follette School in Wisconsin.

Lunch with faculty, staff, first-year and some continuing students will be served at 12:30 p.m.
A math assessment will be at 2 p.m. Thursday with teaching assistant Nahlini Prasad to determine which areas to review on Friday at 10 a.m. The assessment and review will be in L196 Education Building.
After the assessment, students can walk to get their IDs and bus passes and to see the student lounge in the Sewell Social Sciences Building, or they can meet for a social hour at the Terrace at Memorial Union from 4-5 p.m. followed by a picnic at the La Follette School. LSSA is helping with all these activities.
For the picnic, second-year students, faculty, and staff will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, vegetarian options, sides, beverages, and desserts to make quite the feast. “New students don’t have to provide anything – you only need to bring yourselves,” says LSSA secretary Kelsey Hill. “It’s always a good time and a great chance to connect with continuing students. Plus, it is a nice way to decompress after a long first day of orientation.” More information on Facebook
On Friday, August 31, LSSA will hold a used textbook sale in the La Follette School lounge. Accelerated students meet from 1-2 p.m. at La Follette. A campus tour departs the school at 3 p.m. One or two second-year students will lead incoming students on a tour of the buildings commonly used by La Follette students, the student lounges and other important campus locations,” Hill says. “There will also be the chance to stop and get IDs and bus passes.” More information on Facebook
