The La Follette School partners with the Wisconsin Senate to immerse motivated high school students in the inner workings of the State Capitol. Students meet with lawmakers, agency heads, staff, policy professors, lobbyists, journalists and others in a weeklong, behind-the-scenes look at what makes democracy work.
La Follette School professor Dennis Dresang and the La Follette School Outreach Office helped the Wisconsin Senate Chief Clerk's office organize the program, which brings high school students from around Wisconsin to spend a week learning more about how their states government works. Each scholar receives a hands-on, up-close view of the Legislatures role in democracy and gains experience working with senators and legislative staff in policy development, constituent relations and the legislative process.
Three groups, each with about 15 students, spend a week in Madison in the spring. During that week, the high school students meet with La Follette School faculty and students.
