The La Follette School of Public Affairs and the University of Wisconsin–Madison European Union Center of Excellence sponsored a conference, “Reinventing the Industrial Heartland: Supply Chain Sustainability and the New Automotive Industry,” on October 6, 2011. The conference focused on how the Midwest could use German innovations in technology, policy and supply chain management to reinvent the Midwest’s auto and other manufacturing industries.
A research roundtable was held October 7 to explore questions raised in the conference, as well as other issues about urban mobility and the automobile of the future.
At each event, speakers from Germany and university research fellows explored how the auto industry will change dramatically, triggering new approaches to roads, buildings, energy and even driving itself. Policies and practices affecting construction, development, energy, manufacturing and the workforce also were examined.
