Presidential knowledge paid off big time for Mitch’s Witches at the La Follette School Student Association (LSSA) Fall 2019 Trivia Fundraiser. By knowing the first president born in a completely independent United States, the team of first-year students took first place in the 12-team competition at Giant Jones Brewing on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

Mitch McFarlane, Alyssa Dooley, Sarah Ebben, and Lindsey Starrett won a $20 Ian’s Pizza gift card and a $50 gift card to Comedy on State. As runners-up, the Brawny Birthday Boys received the leftover (open) boxes of dry pasta from the halftime question.

Two other first-year students, Genevieve Caffrey and Manpreet Sandhu, won the Halloween costume competition as Pumpkin Pi. For their creativity, Caffrey and Sandhu received a $20 Giant Jones gift card.

Michael Zell and Jackson Parr (Forest Gump) served as emcees, Michael Caniglia and Johannes Dreisbach were scorekeepers, and Toni Sopukeeva and Mingxin Zhang sold La Follette School t-shirts for LSSA.

The faculty team of Mark Copelovitch, Jason Fletcher, Greg Nemet, Lauren Schmitz, and Tim Smeeding stayed in contention until the final question, while staff were represented by the Nightmare on Observatory Drive – Bonnie MacRitchie, Heidi Normandin, Mo O’Connor, and Scott and Lisa Hildebrand.

Erika Jones (MPA ’11) and Jessica Jones launched Giant Jones Brewing, 931 E. Main St., in June 2018. Using organic ingredients, Giant Jones specializes in full-flavor, high-gravity, yet approachable beers, especially barleywines.

For the record, Martin Van Buren was the first president born in a completely independent United States.
