Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs

Several La Follette School faculty members are widely known for their innovative work developing and utilizing methods to elevate the role of research and evidence in policymaking, including Don Moynihan, Dave Weimer, Michael Collins, Yang Wang, Emilia Tjernstrom, and Hilary Shager.

Moynihan is an award-winning scholar of performance management—how government uses managerial techniques such as strategic planning and measuring performance data to reorganize public services in ways that increase effectiveness and efficiency. Weimer is the author of seminal textbooks on policy analysis, cost-benefit analysis, and organizational report cards.

Collins, Tjernstrom, and Wang use cutting-edge program evaluation methods to measure impacts of federal, state, and international interventions. Shager is the director of the Wisconsin Family Impact Seminars and Committee Connect, programs that provide state policymakers with objective, high quality research and build partnerships between the UW-Madison and State Legislature.
